Grafting the roses

Roses are the most important plants; loved by gardeners and enthusiasts. With their beauty, in fact, they fill a world and with their characteristics they allow you to experiment with various cultivation techniques. One of these has to do with reproduction, or rather with the methods that make it possible to obtain new plants from a mother plant. The main technique of reproduction of roses è l’ graft. The latter consists of grafting parts of a plant of the same species onto another 26-rsquo; più rustica called mother plant. In roses, bud grafts are usually practiced, i.e. a small bud is taken from the second plant and grafted it into the mother plant.

Types of grafting

Roses allow two types of grafting: a dormant bud and a vegetative bud. The first is done using gems that will take root the following spring; the second, using gems that will take root immediately. L’ dormant bud graft is also called eye or shield. This is the most recommended for roses, becauseé the buds will sprout the following spring and give più roses; resistant to adversityà ;. L’ vegetating bud grafting uses buds in full vegetative state that sprout within a very short time from the grafting. This second technique però it does not guarantee the results of the former and often we witness the death of the plant due to frost.

When and how to graft

L’ dormant bud grafting is done in July, August, while vegetative bud grafting is done in June and July. To graft roses, two similar plants or of the same species are chosen. The rootstock must be rustic or wild, in this sense it is better to use rose hips. The bud is taken from a second plant that is healthy and in good condition. To collect the gem, dig about one centimeter from the bark of the più branch; strong and vigorous. The part taken, called the eye or the shield, is grafted into the branch or trunk of the rootstock where &is; A T-shaped cut was made. L’ graft is then tied with laces or raffia.

Rose grafts goals

The grafts are carried out to have più roses; healthy and hardy or with più flowers; colored and più large. L’ bud grafting, for example, allows for plants that have flowers of different colors. In other words, yellow, pink or red flowers bloom simultaneously on the same plant. To obtain healthy roses, grafts must be carried out with well cleaned and disinfected blade tools both before and after use.
